Oxford 1:72 Royal Navy Fairey Swordfish Mk. I Torpedo Plane, OXFAC111
The Royal Navy Fairey Swordfish Mk. I Torpedo Plane, featured in the Skyward Collection, holds historical significance as a three-man torpedo-bomber and reconnaissance biplane utilized during wartime. Known for its fabric-covered metal structure and ability to fold wings for carrier storage, this aircraft played a crucial role in military operations. Equipped with forward and rear Vickers machine guns, the Swordfish was primarily used for delivering depth charges, mines, bombs, and torpedoes. Despite its vulnerabilities to enemy fire due to its slow speed, the Swordfish eventually found success in anti-submarine warfare missions.
The wings folded for storage on the crowded deck of an aircraft carrier. Pictured here is a 1:72 scale replica of a Royal Navy Fairey Swordfish Mk. I torpedo plane the participating in the FAA/RN Historic Flight, which was held at RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron).
